What makes a good plumbing business name?
Think about how customers will actually meet your name: shouted across a kitchen, typed into Google with wet hands, read off the side of a van at 30mph.
The names that work best usually tick most of these:
Easy to say and spell.
If you have to spell it out every time you answer the phone, it costs you.
Says what you do.
"Plumbing", "Heating" or "Drains" in the name saves explaining.
Short enough for a van and a Google listing.
Two or three words is the sweet spot.
Room to grow.
"Basildon Taps" is tricky when you start fitting heat pumps in Chelmsford.
Not too close to a rival.
Especially another plumber within your service area.
Available as a domain.
Ideally a .co.uk or .com that matches.
Honest.
Don't imply qualifications, memberships or approvals you don't hold.
Which names should plumbers avoid?
Some names cause legal or practical headaches.
Anything with "Gas Safe" in it. Gas Safe Register's Brand Enforcement Policy says businesses will not be permitted to register with trading names that include its trade mark terms, and lists using "Gas Safe" or a similar mark in a trading name as misuse (as of October 2026). Show your registration number on your website instead. Only registered businesses may display the logo and number.
Sensitive words. GOV.UK says a company name can't include a "sensitive" word without permission, and gives "Accredited" as one example that needs government permission (GOV.UK, as of October 2026).
"Ltd" when you are a sole trader. GOV.UK says sole trader names must not include "limited", "Ltd", "LLP" or "plc", must not be offensive, and must not be too similar to someone else's trade mark (GOV.UK, as of October 2026).
Boiler and merchant brand names. Using a manufacturer's or merchant's name in yours suggests a link that doesn't exist and invites a complaint.
Fake urgency or claims. "Number 1 Plumbers" or "Best Price Plumbing" make promises you would need to back up.
What checks should you run before you commit to a name?
Run all five before you pay for signwriting, a logo or a website.
- Companies House. Use the name availability checker linked from GOV.UK. A limited company name can't be the "same as" an existing one, and GOV.UK says names that differ only by punctuation or similar-looking words can count as the same (as of October 2026). Even a sole trader should check, to avoid clashing with a local limited company.
- UK trade marks. The IPO's trade mark search lets you search by keyword or phrase to see if something identical or similar is already registered (as of October 2026). If you plan to grow, registering your own mark is worth considering: GOV.UK says it costs at least £205 (as of October 2026).
- Domain names. Check the .co.uk and .com. Avoid hyphens and numbers if you can, since they are hard to say over the phone.
- Google Maps. Search the name in Google Maps across your service area. If a plumber, heating engineer or drainage firm nearby has something similar, customers and Google will mix you up.
- Social handles. Check Facebook, Instagram and any platform you will actually use.
Then say it out loud on the phone to a friend: "Hello, [name], how can I help?" If it sounds awkward, keep looking.

How do you pick from a shortlist of names?
Once you have three to five names that pass the checks, test them properly before deciding.
- The phone test. Answer an imaginary call with each name ten times. The one that still feels natural on the tenth go is a good sign.
- The van test. Write each name in big letters on a sheet of paper and look at it from across the road. Long names and fancy spellings vanish at a distance.
- The spelling test. Say the name to three people and ask them to type it into Google. If any of them spell it wrong, customers will too.
- The five-year test. Picture your business with three vans, an office and heat pump work. Does the name still fit?
- The partner test. Ask someone who will be honest with you, ideally not family, which one sounds most trustworthy.
Then buy the domain straight away, even before you register anything else. Good matching domains can go quickly.
Should your plumbing business name include your town?
There is a trade-off.
Locals instantly know you are nearby
Works anywhere you expand
Can match what people type into Google
Easier to sell or rebrand later
Harder to cover the next town over
Needs your area spelled out on your website and Google profile
Can clash with other "[Town] Plumbing" firms
More likely to be unique
Your name is not what gets you found in a town. Google says local ranking comes from relevance, distance and prominence (Google, as of October 2026). A clear website with a page for each area you cover, and a complete Google Business Profile, do far more than squeezing a town into your name.
Does the name affect your website and Google listing?
Yes, in three practical ways:
Keep it identical everywhere.
Your name should match on your van, Google Business Profile, website, invoices, Companies House and Gas Safe registration. Mismatches confuse customers and search engines alike.
Don't stuff keywords into your Google name.
Use your real business name. Your services and areas belong in your categories, description and website pages.
Make the domain easy.
A domain that matches the name exactly is easiest to remember from a van.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put Gas Safe in my plumbing business name?
No. Gas Safe Register's brand enforcement policy says new businesses can't register with trading names that include its trade mark terms, and treats similar names as misuse.
Should a plumber use their own name for the business?
It works well for a local, personal business and is easy to remember. It is harder to sell later and can feel small if you grow into a multi-van firm, so think about where you want to be in five years.
Do I need to register my plumbing business name?
A limited company name is registered at Companies House when you form the company. A sole trader name doesn't need registering, but it must not include Ltd or plc and must not be too similar to someone's trade mark.
Should my plumbing business name include my town?
It can help locals know you are nearby, but it may hold you back if you expand. A broader area name, or a neutral name with your towns listed on your website, keeps your options open.
How do I know if a name is already taken?
Check the Companies House name availability checker, the UK IPO trade mark search, domain availability and Google Maps for your area. If a plumber nearby uses something similar, pick another.
