Part 1: Which AI tools can a plumber actually use?
Start with the jobs you hate or keep missing. For most plumbing businesses, that is one of three things: calls you can't answer, quotes you write at 10pm, and admin that never ends.
AI call answering (the "AI receptionist")
An AI receptionist answers your phone when you can't, talks to the caller, takes their details and either books a slot or sends you a summary.
Why plumbers look at it: you are under a sink, the phone rings, and by the time you call back they have rung someone else.
What to check before you pay for one:
Does it handle emergencies safely?
If a caller says they smell gas, the right answer is the National Gas Emergency number, not a booking slot. Test this yourself.
Can it reach a human?
Many callers want to speak to the plumber. Make sure urgent calls can be forwarded.
Does it connect to your diary or job software?
If it just sends an email, you still have to type it up.
How is it priced?
Per minute, per call or flat monthly. Work out the cost against your real call volume.
What happens to the recordings and transcripts?
Callers' names, addresses and problems are personal data. Check where they are stored and for how long, and update your privacy notice.
How does it sound?
Ring it yourself as a confused customer. If it annoys you, it will annoy them.
A simpler first step is a well-written voicemail and a text-back message. Some plumbers find that does most of the job.
AI for quotes and messages
General AI chat tools are good at turning rough notes into a tidy quote description or customer message. For example:
- "Turn these notes into a clear quote for a combi boiler swap, listing what's included and excluded."
- "Write a polite reply to a customer asking why the price is higher than another quote."
- "Draft a reminder for a customer whose annual boiler service is due."
The rule: AI writes the draft, you check the numbers. It can't see the airing cupboard, the flue run or the state of the existing pipework.
AI for admin and marketing
Other uses we see plumbers getting value from:
| Task | How AI helps | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Review replies | Drafts a short, personal reply | Edit so it sounds like you, never post generic replies |
| Job write-ups | Turns photos and notes into a short project description for your website | Only describe work you actually did |
| Social posts | Ideas and captions | Real photos beat AI images every time |
| Emails and letters | Polite chasers for unpaid invoices | Check tone and amounts |
| Explaining jargon | Plain-English explanations of system boilers or unvented cylinders | Fact-check before publishing |
Two hard lines. Never use AI to write fake reviews: the DMCC Act 2024 bans fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews (CMS). And never let AI add a logo, membership or qualification you don't hold.
AI in your job management software
Some trade apps now include AI features; for example, iCertifi lists a GasAI feature in its Gas Cert app (as of October 2026). If you are choosing software, our guide to the best plumbing software in the UK compares the main options and which ones connect to your website.
Part 2: How do plumbers get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI?
Some customers type a full question rather than "plumber near me". Something like: "Who can fix a combi boiler with no hot water in Romford today?" Some of those questions get answered by an AI system rather than a list of links.
You can't buy a place in those answers, and nobody can guarantee one. But you can make your business easy for these systems to find, understand and trust.
What does Google say about AI Overviews?
Google is clear on this. Its guidance on AI features says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet", and that there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary" (as of October 2026).
It also says normal SEO basics still apply: let Google crawl the page, use internal links, keep important content in text, and make sure any structured data matches what's visible on the page.
In plain terms: if your site is good for Google Search, you are already doing most of the work for Google's AI features.
What about ChatGPT?
OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot is used to "surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features", and that sites which block it won't appear in ChatGPT search answers (as of October 2026).
So the first check is technical: make sure your robots.txt and any security plugin aren't blocking it. Some website firewalls can block unfamiliar bots, so check the settings.
What makes a plumbing business easy for AI to recommend?
From the guidance above and the way local search works, these are the things within your control:
- Say exactly what you do, in text. "Boiler installation, boiler servicing, landlord gas safety records, leak detection and bathroom fitting" beats "all aspects of plumbing".
- Say exactly where you work. A page per area you cover, written for that area, not one list of 40 postcodes.
- Show your credentials as text. Gas Safe registration number, WaterSafe or MCS if you hold them, written as text an AI can read, not just as logo images.
- Answer real questions. Pages that answer "how much does a boiler swap cost?" or "do you cover Saturday call-outs?" give AI something specific to quote.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete. Google says local ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence includes "how many reviews you have" (as of October 2026).
- Keep details consistent. Same business name, service area and contact details on your site, Google profile and directories.
- Earn genuine mentions. Local suppliers, trade bodies and community sites mentioning you all add to how well known you are.
What should you not bother with?
"AI-optimised" code.
Google says no special schema or AI-specific files are needed for its AI features.
Mass-produced AI pages.
Fifty near-identical area pages written by AI rarely help, and can make the whole site look thin.
Anyone promising a set number of AI mentions.
Answers change from one question to the next and between platforms.
How do you check whether AI recommends you?
Do it manually, once a month:
- Write down five to ten questions your customers ask, with your towns in them.
- Ask them in ChatGPT, Google (look at the AI Overview) and any other assistant you use.
- Note whether you are named, who is named instead, and which websites are cited.
- Look at what those businesses' pages say that yours doesn't.
Results vary by wording, device and location, so treat it as a rough guide, not a score. Your Search Console data and Google Business Profile insights are steadier numbers to track alongside it.
Where should a plumber start with AI this month?
Keep it small. Pick one problem, try one tool, and measure it for a month.
- Count your missed calls. Check your phone log for a typical week. If you miss several calls a day while on jobs, call answering is worth testing. If you miss one or two, a better voicemail and text-back may be enough.
- Use a free AI chat tool for one admin job. Review replies or invoice chasers are a good start, because you can check every word before it goes out.
- Write down your prices first. AI is only as good as the information you give it. A simple list of your standard jobs and prices makes AI drafts far more accurate.
- Check your website can be crawled. Ask whoever looks after it to confirm search and AI bots are not blocked.
- Ask five customer questions in ChatGPT and Google. Note who gets mentioned. That is your starting point.
Whatever you try, you stay responsible for what goes out under your name: quotes, messages, reviews and website claims.

Frequently asked questions
Is an AI receptionist worth it for a plumber?
It can be if you regularly miss calls while on jobs. Test it on your own number first, check it books jobs the way you want, and make sure urgent calls such as gas smells or major leaks reach a human or the right emergency advice.
Can AI price a plumbing job for me?
It can help draft a quote from your notes and your own price list, but it can't see the job. Always check quantities, parts and labour yourself before a quote goes out under your name.
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my plumbing business?
There is no switch. Make sure your website can be crawled by AI search tools, describe your services, areas and credentials clearly in text, keep your Google Business Profile complete, and earn genuine reviews and local mentions.
Do I need special code for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.
Can you guarantee my plumbing business appears in AI answers?
No one honestly can. We run regular manual checks of AI answers for the questions your customers ask and report what we find, alongside Search Console and Google Business Profile data.
